Lizzy Dimeck
PSYCHOTHERAPIST
Approach and background
For over 12 years, I have worked as a psychotherapist with patients suffering from anxiety, grief, high emotional sensitivity, emotional dysregulation, depression, trauma and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.
Often people seek therapy because they’re at a point in their lives where they feel stuck, hopeless, or desperate and need help. Together we will explore the beliefs and ideas you hold about yourself and the world. We will work to build an understanding of pain, repeating patterns of thought, emotion and behaviour. This can support you to develop a greater self-awareness and feel empowered to choose different ways of being and relating.
I believe it is vital to establish a safe, caring, and contained space for a therapeutic relationship to develop, and for change to occur. I have specialised in Mentalisation Based Treatment (MBT) for twelve years. MBT observes both our mind’s capacity to go “offline” and stop thinking under emotional pressure, and the need for a safe attachment figure to support us to regain our thinking and reflect on emotionally challenging experiences, desires and motivations.
I also draw on my experience as a qualified yoga teacher and am interested in how experiences in the body can communicate trauma and emotional distress, in a way that has not yet found words. I aim to listen to these experiences, and alongside you, try to give words and thoughts to them.
I practice in a way that doesn’t pathologise sexualities and am sensitive to the impact of class, race and gender that effect our lives and our work together.
I have significant experience as both an individual and group therapist. I have worked as a psychotherapist in the NHS for nine years, in private practice for four years. I am also an accredited MBT supervisor with the renowned Anna Freud Centre. This involves training and supervising NHS professions in delivering MBT treatment to patients with complex emotional needs, and offering clinical supervision to NHS teams.
Registered Psychotherapist with General Psychotherapy Council (registration number - 062025)
Experience
I am a qualified, experienced psychotherapist registered with the General Psychotherapy Council. I am accredited as a Mentalisation-Based Therapist (MBT) with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). My main area of specialism and expertise is MBT, which I have been practicing for 12 years.
I began my work in forensic services with male offenders, both within the prison population and upon their release into the community. Since 2016, I have worked in the NHS in a Complex Emotional Needs Service with patients who suffer from complex emotional and relational difficulties, many of whom meet criteria for personality disorder and/or complex PTSD. Within this role, I deliver the full 18-month MBT intensive treatment programme, which involves weekly individual and group therapy. I supervise MBT therapists and offer training across the trust and to external NHS teams on working with this patient group. I am passionate about supporting professionals to think about complex emotional needs, trauma, and relational difficulties in a way that allows space for empathy, minimizes othering, and challenges harmful stereotypes that can make accessing treatment and care difficult.
Since 2020, I have been working as part of a small private therapy team offering the full MBT treatment programme. I also see individuals for once-weekly private psychotherapy.
I trained as an MBT Supervisor with The Anna Freud Centre in 2022. I supervise trainees across the country on the NHS-funded MBT training course and support them in their journey towards MBT practitioner accreditation. I offer private MBT supervision (both operational and clinical) to NHS teams nationwide to support their delivery of MBT treatment. In supervision, I hold space to think about the complex dynamics activated when working with patients, systemic dynamics that arise, as well as unconscious and parallel processes.
