Opportunities for Therapists at The Brixton Practice
Thank you for visiting the opportunities page
What We Are Looking For
Due to an increasing demand for our psychotherapy services, we are now inviting therapists to join The Brixton Practice. We have regular opportunities for counsellors, psychologists, psychotherapists and complimentary practitioners. We are looking for people interested in what we refer to as a radically relational approach, to join our growing team.
We see the radically relational approach as predominantly a two-person, ongoing, reflective process. It is an organic and non-directive approach to therapy, whereby we work towards trusting what needs to unfold and emerge.
As therapists at The Brixton Practice, we emphasise the importance of authenticity and congruence as first principles. First and foremost, we are two human beings in the room - professional and client. We are process-orientated in our approach. We support our clients in exploring their strengths and vulnerabilities, through creating a therapeutic space that allows them to deepen into and open up in their process. We see ourselves as both professionals and human beings in the therapeutic space. Through this, newness can surface as the client feels safe to explore their internal and external worlds.
Through the process of genuine, real contact, clients can discuss and explore what is emerging, as material from the unconscious begins to reveal itself. The therapists willingness to be real helps the client to notice what - from the unconscious - is emerging between client and therapist. Through this process, insight, healing and change is made possible. The therapeutic space needs boundaries, with flexibility - creating a secure container which allows for safe surprises. These are the beginnings of newness, where healing truly occurs when worked through successfully.
Therefore, we are proponents of the participant-observer way of working, acknowledging that psychotherapy is a two-person psychology. The client will re-enact their relational trauma with the therapist. As relational therapists, we consider these re-enactments safe surprises, which we can then use to learn more about what happened for the client in childhood and what is happening in significant current relationships. Safe surprises are ways to bring maladaptive patterns to the surface, to reflect upon, and then start to change.
At The Brixton Practice, we emphasise a trauma-based approach to understanding and recovering from psychological problems. Traumatic experiences can occur in any number of different ways. However, at its root, trauma is more often than not located in parent/primary caregiver complexities. We pay attention to traumas that happen in adulthood, but the response to adult traumas are very often rooted back to developmental trauma. If relationships with others cause damage, a healthy therapeutic relationship can help repair that damage.
Your Experience
We are interested in hearing from those who resonate with our radically relational approach and philosophy towards psychotherapy. We are looking for trainee therapists interested in one-to-three year voluntary apprenticeship placements, training therapists who are signed off to work privately, and newly qualified therapists looking to start your private practice in a relational environment. We are also looking for experienced therapists interested in this way of working.
You will need to be professionally training or trained - either a registered student or registered practitioner with one of the recognised governing bodies. From psychotherapists to psychologists to complimentary practitioners, we have a diverse team at our practice.
What We Can Offer
The Brixton Practice prides itself on being a welcoming and supportive centre for both clients and practitioners. As a practitioner working at The Brixton Practice, we offer supervision to trainee, training and qualified therapists. Nathan - the founder of The Brixton Practice - has been working in the mental and social health field over the last twenty-five years. As well as offering formal supervision, he is also available Monday to Friday for informal support and mentoring. Trelawny - the practice manager - is also available throughout the week to support with all areas of the practice that are non-clinical.
When joining us, you have the option of a practitioner profile on our website and access to supervision, a chance to pick up referrals, and be part of a supportive community of like-minded professionals.
For training and newly qualified therapists starting out, we have a supportive scheme to help you build your private practice. If you are a trainee, we have an apprenticeship placement scheme available. Please contact us to find out more about these schemes, and we can answer any questions you may have.
We would love to hear from professionally trained and registered psychotherapists and counsellors with experience, who resonate with our radically relational approach. With the option of access to private supervision, a practitioner profile on our website, and referrals, you’ll have the opportunity to grow your practice and be part of a thriving community of therapists here at The Brixton Practice. We provide a friendly environment in which to see your clients face-to-face. If you feel you’d fit with our approach and are professionally trained and experienced, please get in touch or fill out the application form.
Current Opportunities for Experienced Qualified Therapists
We would love to hear from newly qualified therapists and those still in training (and signed off to start your own private practice) who resonate with our radically relational approach. We have a scheme to support you to establish and grow a psychotherapy or counselling private practice. You will also have access to private supervision, a practitioner profile on our website, and referrals. Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more about our supportive scheme for therapists.
Current Opportunities for Training and Newly Qualified Therapists
If you are a trainee therapist, we offer a voluntary apprenticeship placement to work at The Brixton Practice Low-Cost Service. Our scheme is set up to support you clinically and in learning how to run a private practice. You will be supported in taking ownership of your caseload, including when you book clients into your practice. You will also receive regular group and one-to-one supervision. If all goes well, you will have options available for joining our training and newly qualified schemes, where you can receive supervision and be part of our growing community of psychotherapists and counsellors.

Therapy Rooms at The Brixton Practice
At The Brixton Practice, our rooms are all well maintained and carefully decorated to create a relaxing atmosphere for you and your clients. They have all been carefully built, using quality soundproofing to support the needs of our therapists and clients. There is always someone who tends to our growing family of plants, making the place feel bright.
Located directly opposite Brixton station, our therapy rooms are perfectly located for easy access across London. Rooms are available for counsellors, psychotherapists, and professionals in related fields such as coaches and body-based therapies.
We have two sites on Tunstall Road. One at Tunstall Studios, 34-44 Tunstall Road, and one at our Level Out site, 10-12 Tunstall Road. At both sites, we have a treatment bed for any body-based practitioners to use. At the Tunstall Studios site, we have a secure, indoor area for therapists and clients to leave their bikes. We also have access to a roof terrace, shower, kitchen, toilets, and a store room to keep any equipment such as materials used in your practice.
At the Level Out site, we have use of the Level Out reception/waiting area, showers, and a store room for keeping things. As a therapist with The Brixton Practice, you have access to both site facilities, regardless of which site you work from. We have 6 rooms, 1-4 at Tunstall Studios, and 5-6 at Level Out.
Our consulting rooms are available Monday to Sunday, with the availability to use the space from as early in the morning until as late in the evening as you wish. All of our rooms can be used for individual and couples work. Three of our rooms are large enough to do body-based work with a treatment bed. Of those three rooms, one of those is large enough to comfortably accommodate family therapy or small group work.
