Elizabeth Akindutire
PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPIST
Approach and background
People often come to therapy not because everything has fallen apart, but because something inside feels unsettled, or harder to carry than before. You might be managing well on the surface, while internally feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure why familiar patterns keep showing up in your relationships or inner world.
My work is relational and Psychodynamic, and I have an interest in how earlier experiences and relationships continue to shape how you relate to yourself and others today. Some patterns once helped us cope or survive, while others can begin to feel limiting and conflicted, or self-critical. In therapy, we take time to understand these dynamics rather than rushing to change them.
I pay attention not only to what’s spoken, but also to what emerges between us in the silences, emotional shifts, and the themes that are repeated, as these tend to hold important meaning. Therapy can become a gradual process of developing curiosity about yourself and making room for parts of you that may have been ignored or felt too difficult to hold alone.
My work is informed by an awareness of culture, identity, and representation, shaped in part by my own African heritage. I recognise how race, faith, belonging, and intergenerational experiences can influence emotional life and relationships, and I welcome these themes along with similarities and differences between us into the therapeutic space. I have experience working with shame, identity and belonging, anxiety, low mood, and life transitions. We’ll take time to make sense of what you’re bringing at a pace that feels right for you.
Training, qualifications, and experience
I am a qualified Psychodynamic Therapist (MBACP) and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), adhering to their ethical framework in all areas of my practice. I am committed to ongoing professional development and regularly undertake training to deepen and expand my clinical skills.
Before training as a therapist, I worked across a range of mental health and support services, supporting vulnerable adults with complex needs. These experiences strengthened my understanding of safeguarding, risk, and the importance of trauma-informed, compassionate care.
