Elizabeth Akindutire

PSYCHODYNAMIC THERAPIST

Approach and background

Starting therapy can feel like a big step. It’s completely natural to feel unsure or even daunted by the idea of opening up. However, some might welcome the idea. Whether you are coming with something specific or simply a sense that something isn’t quite right, you’re welcome just as you are. Sometimes life can feel heavy or hard to navigate. You might not have the words for what you’re feeling or perhaps the words don’t quite fit. I believe there’s real value in giving space to what feels difficult, without rushing to make it neat or tidy.

I offer a warm, grounded, and non-judgemental space to explore your experiences, relationships and emotions. My approach is relational and psychodynamic, which means I am interested in how your earlier experiences and relationships shape who you are and how you relate to yourself and others. While many of these patterns once supported or protected us, some can remain long after their purpose has passed, leaving us feeling stuck or disconnected.

In our work together, I pay close attention not just to what’s spoken, but also to what emerges in silences, tensions, and repeated themes that may be communicating something important. Therapy is a gradual process of becoming more curious about yourself and slowly making room for feelings or parts of yourself that may have been ignored, pushed aside, or silenced. In our sessions, your whole self is invited, even the parts that feel painful, uncertain, and conflicted. I aim to hold these experiences with care and compassion, offering a space to explore what they might be telling you.

My work is informed by an awareness of culture, identity, and representation - shaped partly by my own African heritage. I recognise how race, faith, belonging, and intergenerational experiences can impact how we move through the world. I welcome these themes into the room, along with the ways in which similarities and differences between us might become meaningful in the therapeutic relationship. Feeling understood and appreciated for who you are can be the beginning of powerful change.

Change is inevitable, but it can be hard to face alone. You may be struggling with feelings of shame or self-criticism, questions of identity and belonging, stress, anxiety or depression, and life transitions. Whatever you are bringing, we can begin to make sense of these experiences together at your own pace.

Training, qualifications, and experience

I am a qualified Psychodynamic Counsellor (MBACP) and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, adhering to their ethical framework in all areas of my practice.

I am committed to ongoing professional development and regularly undertake training to deepen and expand my clinical skills. Before training as a counsellor, I worked across a range of mental health and support services, supporting vulnerable adults with complex needs. These experiences strengthened my understanding of safeguarding, risk, and the importance of trauma-informed, compassionate care.
